Hi , Today I created a super column . I thought it was really cool how much some paper columns can hold. Overall I was able to hold about 6 things with my super column. Well actually I had 9 but I Nanogirl said to try a rock. It was quite heavy making so I could only hold about six on my super column. It was tricky to put the rock because it was so heavy and the whole thing would collapse. What I discovered was that if you put the items on two columns horizontally , vertically or diagonally. It create more support. Because it is balancing on the columns. So I put the heavier things like the rock. I ended up using 5 columns made out of paper sticked with tape to put my six items on. The items I used were , a rock , two phones , a pair of scissors , a glasses case with glasses in them , a paper flower. A helpful tip would be to put heavier things on columns. Here are some photos below.
Kia ora Joe,
ReplyDeleteIt’s Shannon from the Summer Learning Journey again.
You’ve done a fantastic job building your super columns! I’m so impressed. I love how you have included a blurb explaining how you stacked things on your columns and what the most effective technique was! Ka pai, that will definitely help your readers if they try to build super columns themselves!
Did you enjoy building super columns? What sort of building might you build with a few of these?
Perhaps you could add instructions on how to make them for your readers so they can participate too.
Keep up the incredible work!

Hi Shannon , I really enjoyed making a super column, It was quite interesting. Maybe you should try to make one yourself?
ReplyDeleteAll you need is 7 pieces of paper. You will fold 5 in like a cylinder. Keep them loose and then tape it. Then set them on another piece of paper. Place a paper on top of that and see how things you can put on it with out it fall.
Hi Joe,
DeleteThank you for the instructions, I'll give it a crack!
How much weight could your columns hold all up?
Bye for now,
Shannon (SLJ)
Hi Shannon,
DeleteI am not entirely sure about the weight. But if i was to have a guess it would probably all add up to somewhere around 6-9 kgs.
Bye Joe
