Hi , The Kowhaiwhai I have made consists of a koru and a fishing hook. It just keeps going on after that. The koru means a new life or growth. The fishing is a symbol of good luck and strength. So basically what I am saying is the the fishing hook has hooked on to the koru giving it good luck and strength as it grows.

ReplyDeleteMy name is Renee and I’m from the Summer Learning Journey Team. Ka pai for creating this awesome kowhaiwhai design - I can clearly see the fish-hook and koru symbols in your drawing. I particularly appreciate how you have included the background to your design intentions in your post. I also didn’t know that the fish-hook was a symbol of good luck, that is really interesting. How did you know that?
What was your inspiration for choosing to feature a fish-hook in your kowhaiwhai pattern? Do you like fishing? What other activities do you like to do in the summer? My favourite summer activities are swimming in the ocean and spending time outdoors with whanau.
Ngā mihi nui and keep up the excellent mahi - I can’t wait to see your other posts over the summer.

Hi Renee, I actually found out the fish hook means that during a trip to a marae. I just thought that a koru is a new born baby and the fish hook will keep him and safe and give him good luck. I like to play sport like cricket . and drink refreshing drink during a hot day.
ReplyDeleteKia ora Joe - thanks so much for responding to my questions, that is really interesting about the symbolic meaning of a fish hook and the koru and this background makes your kowhaiwhai come to life even more. I really like cricket as well - haven't the Black Caps been playing well this summer?
ReplyDeleteNgā mihi nui
